Bill Nye the Science Guy Saves the World

Bill Nye the Science Guy is back! The scientist has a new t.v. show on Netflix called “Bill Nye Saves the World” to help encourage people to develop more ecofriendly life style. The science show focuses on addressing the issues of climate change, clean water, renewable electricity, along with much more providing scientific reasons as to why people should help save the world. The episodes consist of roundtable discussions with experts and tape pieces of examples along with Nye’s explanation on what is happening and some ways to fix it. Like in his PBS kids show Nye’s explanations are easy to understand and funny with his same nerdy personality. I believe that this show will appeal to a wide range of people especially those in my age range since they grew up on watching the PBS show “Bill Nye the Science Guy” in school science classes. The new series just released on Netflix on April 21. To check out some more information about the topics covered in the show and watch and interview with Nye click on the link below.

Ragnarok

On April 10, 2017 Marvel Studio’s YouTube channel Marvel Entertainment released the first teaser trailer for the next installment in the Thor series and Marvel Universe. Thor: Ragnarok is the third movie that fallows the Avenger Thor on his battles to protect his home world Asgard. The trailer shows his powerful new villain Hela who wants to take over Asgard and is able to destroy Thor’s main weapon, Mjolnir. The trailer also shows some of the struggles that he will have to face throughout the movie. One struggle is where Thor is captured and has to fight as a gladiator against an unlikely opponent his fellow Avenger Hulk, who disappeared at the end of the Avengers Age of Ultron. What is cool that we did not get to see in the trailer is the inclusion of Doctor Strange and the search for Thor’s father Odin that fans got a sneak peak in at the end credits. Since Thor is my favorite Avenger I am already super excited to see the movie when it gets released. However I didn’t really have a giant understanding of what was going to happen in the movie which the trailer helped with.

Eco Art

The artist Sean Yoro’s latest piece Puliki, “to embrace” in Hawaian, creates amazing works of art that are completely eco-friendly. Yoro uses natural chalk and water to create his works which can be easily washed away. The idea of Puliki is to send a message about environmental issues such as climate change, droughts, wild fires, and deforestation. Through this message Yoro hopes to get more people involved in protecting the natural world. The image shown above was painted somewhere in the Pacific Northwest that recently suffered from wild fires.

Sean Yoro is known as the artist Hula and does mainly portraits. Yoro says that “One of the exciting things about painting portraits is being able to bring life and emotion to objects and surfaces that were once without. Also these figures just seem to match with the moods. A mysterious surreal combination.” If interested to see more of his works check out his website the first link. Travel Problems

On Thursday March 2, 2017 the European Parliament voted to pass a nonbinding resolution for the reintroduction of traveling visas for American citizens going to and European Union nations. This act is in response to America’s refusal to give visa free entry to five EU countries; Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland, and Romania. While this is nonbinding the act it encourages the European Commission to confront the Washington’s new administration. This Parliament’s vote gave the Commission two months to impose visas for American travelers unless America waives the visas before then. For more information check out the link.

Seven Earths

On February 22, 2017, NASA announced that one of their telescopes in Belgium revealed seven Earth-sized planets about 40 light-years away. This planetary system is located around an ultra-cool dwarf star called Trappist-1 named after the telescope used for their discovery. Three of these planets are located in the habitual zone but since the planets are all extremely close to each other they all have a possibility of water. Not to mention that from the surface of these planets you could easily see the others in the sky. With the launch of NASA’s new telescope in 2018 they will be able to detect if the planets have chemical fingerprints of water, methane, and oxygen which are key to the creation of atmospheres and making the planets habitability. With these seven new planets NASA has taken to twitter to see what people want to call them. I thought this was a great example of crowd sourcing that we talked about this past week. The first links down below are for the video I used and the second is if you guys wanted more information about how NASA discovered these planets.

Hidden Rembrandt

On February 15 Professor Thomas Doring of the Herzog Anton Ulrigh Museum in Braunschweig, Germany announced that they had discovered one work of art to be displayed under the wrong name for 250 years. “The Braunschweig terrier” is a charcoal sketch of a dog that has been displayed as a Johann Melchoir Roos work but is actually a Rembrandt van Rijn, the Dutch master painter of the 17th century known for his painting The Night Watch. Thomas Doring being a well versed in Rembrandt’s style of work recognized the similarity to this sketch two years ago during an inventory. Doring the contacted other scholars of Rembrandt and began a close study of the sketch. Last week they unanimously announced that the sketch was in fact a Rembrandt and will be in a new exhibition that opens in April.
